Dealing with the Workplace

Finding a job can be hard. Saying you're on the Spectrum can be hit or miss: some employers don't really care, some find that kind of thinking to be a benefit to the workplace, and other's don't want Autism in their workforce.

I have only found that my disclosure of my diagnosis to be a benefit. I also work with children and teens who are on the spectrum, so it helps that my bosses understand that I know where these kids are coming from.

Check out my video on my experience in the workplace: Workplace: Finding Belonging

Disclosing your Spectrum Status is entirely up to you. If you need accommodations or you feel your Autism gives a perspective on the job that others don't have then tell your boss or interviewer. If you feel like your Autism is not going to affect your job performance or you are uncomfortable talking about it then don't tell them. The choice is up to you.

When you're in your job, make sure you are doing the best you can. Sometimes people will appreciate your effort. Other times, others will take credit for your work. Stand up for yourself. It is okay to make waves in the workplace. If the workplace doesn't like waves, it might not be the best place for you. Being Autistic, whether your workplace knows or not, means that you will make waves in your job, it is just going to happen. Remember to be yourself, if people like that: GREAT! if the don't that is on them, it is NEVER on you.

If you find that your bosses or other higher-ups were listening to your ideas and now they are not, it might be time for a change. If your higher-ups never listen to fresh ideas then that might not be the best place for you.

I always needed a place that would at least acknowledge the expertise I bring to the table. And I found a place that did. I love working at my job.

If you need to get out of the workplace you are at, then get out of it (whether it is not suitable for you or toxic, it doesn't matter). The reason you leave is up to you but leave on good terms, if you can, since you never know if that company could help you advance in life

You might have to look for a while to find the right workplace for you.
Take your time if you have multiple job offers. Don't jump on the first one right away, unless you know it is the right fit for you. Evaluate your options before you make a decision. Workplace stress takes a toll on your mental wellbeing. Make it good stress or bad stress, but that choice is yours.

Remember to do what is the right thing for you.

Be Kind, Compassionate, and True to You!
